Polysulphate Fertilizer – A New Era for Cocoa Cultivation in Ghana

17 January 2025

The successful arrival of 13,000 metric tons of Polysulphate fertilizer at Tema port in early November 2024 marks a transformative step for cocoa farming in Ghana. This milestone, achieved through collaboration between ICL, Demeter Ghana, and COCOBOD, brings a new chapter to the country’s cocoa growers.

Polysulphate, certified for organic farming, combines sulfur, potassium, magnesium, and calcium in a single natural crystal. Trials in Ghana show it can boost cocoa yields by 13.6% compared to standard fertilizers and 70.8% over unfertilized plots. Its low carbon footprint and prolonged nutrient release offer an eco-friendly, sustainable solution tailored to farmers’ needs, according to ICL’s press release and ICL Growingsolutions.

With operations managed by DEMETER Ghana, the fertilizer is currently being packaged into 50kg bags and distributed to cocoa-growing regions. This initiative not only enhances productivity but also supports Ghana’s role as a global leader in cocoa production while addressing the demand for sustainable farming practices.
