Angola’s $2 Billion Leap: Transforming Agriculture and Industry with a Game-Changing Fertilizer Plant

30 December 2024

Angola is stepping into a new era of economic transformation with an audacious project that combines innovation, ambition, and a vision for sustainable growth. In the city of Soyo, a cutting-edge urea and ammonia plant is set to reshape the nation’s agricultural and industrial landscapes. With a staggering $2 billion investment, this project isn’t just about constructing a facility, it’s about building a future where Angola becomes a self-reliant powerhouse, driving productivity at home and fostering trade across Africa.

Led by OPAIA Group’s subsidiary Amufert S.A., in collaboration with Sonangol Natural Gas (Sonagas), and supported by $1.4 billion in funding from the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), the plant represents a bold leap toward economic diversification. By harnessing Angola’s vast natural gas reserves, it will produce 3,870 metric tons of fertilizers daily, revolutionizing the agricultural sector and significantly reducing the country’s dependency on costly imports.

This project is more than an industrial milestone, it’s a statement of Angola’s determination to take its place as a regional leader in sustainable development. As construction begins in 2025, this transformative initiative will not only elevate the nation’s standing in global markets but also create thousands of jobs, empower local communities, and position Angola as a beacon of progress in Africa.
